THE ASK

A retired couple relocating from Dallas desired to build a new home that would allow them to age in place while being close to their children and grandchildren, who lived across the street. Although they didn’t need a large home, they wanted to ensure it would be enjoyable for family gatherings and beneficial for resale in a thriving market. After discussions, they decided on a modern style that met their needs.

THE PROCESS

Derek James Homes collaborated closely with the homeowners to create a design that balanced functionality with their vision for comfort and accessibility. The home included unique features such as a fully utilized crawlspace, an eight-car garage, and a lanai with a summer kitchen. We also integrated an elevator for ease of access, a media room, and an office, ensuring the layout would support their lifestyle and future needs.

To navigate the challenges of selecting materials and finishes while the clients were living out of town, our team worked with their son and daughter-in-law to facilitate the selection process, providing timely updates and information to ensure they felt involved every step of the way.

THE RESULT

Through careful planning and innovative design, our team brought the client’s vision to life, creating a home filled with natural light and family functionality. The finished residence featured modern aesthetics with floor-to-ceiling glass and practical elements such as a unique air-conditioned entry and utility rooms on both floors. This home became a hub for many family memories to come.
